Days and Daze

Days

We start out days by waking up.  Often we get lots of indication of ourselves for any given day.  Not every day has been the same.  Lots have to do with major stages of life.  Health has a great deal to do with it; the next question always seems to be “Am I well rested?” or “Am I in the middle of a dream cycle?”

A lot of adults have learned to think in terms of “working days” ….contrasted with “days of not working”; as it turns out “days or working” and “days of not working” are both more complicated than each phrase initially suggests.

Then of course, there is working days rather than working nights and weekends.

Days 2

Waking may occur before, during or after dawn.  Personally, my preference is to wake right around dawn.  That means during the Winter I’m “off” my natural cycle or sleeping in late enough to get into trouble with many others.

People who cope with working nights normally wake up after dawn, well after it in fact.  Waking up well rested,  well adjusted to working 2nd or 3rd shift with 3 to 4 hours to go before the children get home from school, another few hours before leaving for work….having seen the spouse in the morning; a spouse who will be entrusted with the children once off to work.

Waking up late with a hangover realizing that it also means one has failed to show up at work on time while horribly lonely is a radically different experience.

Days 3

Days can be almost intolerably long or can zoom by at a frantic pace, loaded with awareness and business the entire time.

One great question I invite you all to answer in the comments section:  what makes a day seem longer to you?

The reason I ask is that I have found that sometimes the longest days are when nothing is going on, but other times it seems to be caused by having a little too much going on.

In my own life, so far, I used to say the longest year of my life was the year I was pregnant: I think it’s because I kept asking myself how far along I was every 3 minutes or else it was because the foetus quadrupled in size and complexity every 5 minutes.

Daze

Boredom, illness, sleep….Trapped in some hellish job or in an entire lifestyle that just feels like a trap.  Any of these may cause a daze.

“Dazed and confused for so long its all true: wanted a woman, never bargained for you…”

Late at night, overtired and intoxicated at the same time while listening with poor concentration to someone talking about an uninteresting subject.  This may be experienced as a daze.

Overwhelmingly happy, just married and at the reception the daughter-father dance went incredibly well.  The best man is holding up the groom, as the groom is dazed by the surreal stunning beauty of his now-wife.  His now father-in-law has said something kind about him during his speech which seems like a definite miracle after having felt despised by the same man the whole time he courted the woman who is now his wife.

Biracial or Mulatto?

Political Correctness

Political correctness is a catch phrase that relates to a socially progressive effort to revamp public discourse.  When operating properly, so called political correctness simply encourages people to think in ways that are liberating and in ways that help to dismantle derogatory ways of discussing groups of people in our own society, and replacing them with respectful language.

When political correctness goes too far, it becomes like a kind of social-thought-Police as bad as the evils of ‘socially sanctioned slander of subgroups within American society’ that it intended to correct and replace.

Race

Race is one of the major issues related to efforts at social progress and liberation within American society during the past 100, really longer, but Civil Rights improvements seem to move in something akin to waves building and then breaking when they hit the beach.

Race, like gender, seems to be a blend of something biological and real, and socially constructed conceptions.  In the extremes, there are people who do not believe in ‘race’; they think the whole matter is a lie.  ‘Race’ has been defined by ‘tribe’, ‘nationality’, ‘religion’, skin color, hair type, social position….over millenia.

Race has often been used to do something simple and fairly scientific like describe people.  My impression of it, was that it actually is a way of describing differences amongst homo sapiens sapiens the same ways that animal husbandry folk discuss variations in breeds and stocks of animals of the same species.  While this can be viewed as insulting it can also be observed as a legitimate means of acknowledging and understanding differences without any kind of insult being involved anywhere.

Biracial and Mulatto

In my first released science fiction novel The Children of Loki by my male pen name Robert Fitzgerald Jr., one of the main characters is described as mulatto.  I have come across one or more people who were happy about that, but others reacted with some shock and told me they were mildly offended that I did not use the term ‘biracial’ instead.

Here’s why not

Eurasians are biracial.  Mulattos are also biracial, but not the same way.  Mestizos are biracial, but again, not the same way.  Because there are multiple ways for human beings to be biracial, I wanted to specify which type of combination it was.

The clinical or technical way to put it:  the main male character Kiel Bronson is a balanced blend of Caucasoid and Negroid races.  In other words, he’s mulatto.

Cultural bias

The fiction character Kiel Bronson is from the planet Earth, but is not from anything like what we would describe as America; well, then again, maybe he is.  In fact, Kiel’s nationality is never specified in the novel.  Set far into the future, as the author, I never even confirmed or denied whether or not the USA even exists on the planet Earth that Kiel heralds from.

There are numerous nations on the planet where this general ‘racial type combination’ might occur.  The Americas is one gigantic region in which this type of blend might occur, but India also has pretty much every imaginable racial combination amongst the people and is a large and populous nation on our same planet.  Here and there in the vast expanse of Africa there are another 54 or so nations, subdivided by tribes which may or may not also be considered to be ‘racially different’, are other people who are a blend of Caucasoid and Negroid.

Conclusion

It is actually presumptuous, but probably common amongst American readers, and strangely enough, even on the part of the author, to assume that Kiel is American.  In truth, I was going to put one of those Norwegian symbols in the ‘o’ of the surname, strongly suggesting that Kiel Bronson might herald from Europe or have one North European parent and one African or American (as in the Americas) parent.  Also, he may be a first generation mulatto or a 7th generation mulatto.  It is not explained.

Bottom Line: As the author, the main thing is that Kiel Bronson is our ‘home town hero’ simply by coming from the planet Earth.

International Gossip: Canada according to Germany

America Shocked

The USA was shocked the other day when reminded for the umpteenth time by Canada that Germany views them as a perfectly real and rather powerful first world nation.

Canada snubbed?!

The USA then felt embarrassed about being shocked because all of that is sort of ‘safely assumed’ ‘goes without saying’ about what Canada is like.  The USA was confronted by emotions one has when instead of trying to keep up with the Jones, the Jones can’t quite keep up…I mean, fortunately that’s how it seems from the American perspective about Canada….but Canada doesn’t really see it that way.

Canada smooches Germany?!

Canada felt slightly, but not severely nonplussed when the USA offended them again.  Canada took solace in Germany’s 2nd post-WW2 generation of “Not NaZis, but still speaking the German language” kindness and more respectful manner towards them.

Canada snubs the USA

Canada decided to sit next to Germany at the picnic.  Educated Germany can speak enough English and also provides universal health coverage.  Canada shared with Germany the rumor that the USA had a per capita consumption of more than double the rate of the next nearest nation: the big hog of the globe, they said.

Male & Female USA

Male USA pretended to not notice and didn’t believe the rumor.  Male USA felt superior to both Canada and Germany.  Female USA felt embarrassed by male USA but still needs his money and help raising the children.  She realized that the criticism made by Canada and Germany might have some truth to it.

Last words:

In truth, blog readers, I was told that Canada noticed me today, so I wanted to say something to you.

Wedding Jewelry

Wedding Jewelry Take 1

Most people, especially women, love wedding jewelry.  The diversity of style, color, stones and price and everything they symbolize is so impressive, beautiful and romantic.

I am no different in this respect.

The Sad Truth

So far in my life, despite having married, I have only about 9 years of experience being legally married and it took 3 different men, just to get me those precious 9 years and to stick me with short term marriage instead of being married for over 20 years now as intended when I got married.

Making Proper Use of This Information

Despite everything sad about how I came into the information, I want to make some happy use of various observations I have made from having spent some time married and some time not married about wedding jewelry.

Observations

  • Some people believed to be friends and members of the opposite sex disappear the moment they see wedding jewelry.   That definitely tells you something.
  •  Wedding jewelry is a great ‘ice breaker’ for conversations.
  •  There are people who have more respect for women who are wearing wedding jewelry.
  •  If you are ever seen wearing wedding jewelry but then go even one day without wearing it, people will wonder whether it means you are having marital problems or about to get divorced, even if it is that you are going to work out, and the ring doesn’t fit whenever your hands get hot and puffed up, or you are going to be doing any type of work that might endanger your precious ring.
  •  Wedding bands can be cheap and to the point.
  •  Wedding jewelry can both protect the wearer against unwanted sexual / romantic interest, and can be depressing because it makes potentially interested persons unwilling to even try to have a friendly and harmless 5 minute live chat.

Observations 2

These are about going without wedding jewelry during one’s marriage.  This can occur for various reasons.  In this case, I am only going to write about dealing without wedding jewelry even when there is not definitive “marital trouble” instead of when going without the jewelry because there is a marital problem.

  •  There is no distinction made between your girlfriend or boyfriend and your wife or husband.  This can be soothing for couples who were together long before marriage and had honest respect for their romance.
  •  This can be troublesome in that people think your beaux or toy boy has not become your spouse, when really the relationship is more serious (in a good way) than others may have been led to believe.
  •  People, or single people, remain friendlier.  Bear in mind, that one of the observations is that the vast majority of ‘interest’ leads not to adultery but to 5 minutes of conversation at a workplace or means that someone will sit with you at lunch in the breakroom at work.
  • One may accidentally prevent friendships with other married people because neither they nor others saw the ring and tried to befriend you thanks to the fact that you are married; this is in contrast to the people to steered cleared of you once they saw the same thing.

Final Comments

In all seriousness, one should try to be aware of the intentions and influences of wedding jewelry and sensitivity to how wearing it, or going without it, may give certain messages.

Please be aware that despite my own failures I am a staunch supporter of intact families and good marriages.  True love, stable homes, families and finances are healthy for the entire society, are what God recommends and can make life quite nice.  I have been trying to get a permanent (50+ year long) partner since about age 17 years.  I am nearly 51 and have quite a past but not the stable past of “wow am I ever just still married for quite a while now…having crested over the Silver anniversary halfway point towards a 50th wedding anniversary.”

Rather than abuse my suffering, just enjoy the observations and make use of them in your own life; or post comments about your life and observations about wedding jewelry.

Quickie

This is just a quick thanks to everyone who has been reading these lately.  I may well write something more later on today, but wanted to get this message out to you.

How this format is and is not interactive can be strange, but not weirder than radio or public broadcasting.

Locally, the weather has cooled back down.  It is that time of year.

Spiritual Book Promo with Chat

Without Rival video

Who the heck is that lady?

Lisa Bevere, during her 50s often unapologetically refers to herself as a Sicilian grandmother.  She is a rather famous Protestant Christian preacher.  She’s American.  She is a wife, a mother and a grandmother.  She has also written a number of books, specializing in Christian inspirational nonfiction.

Writers Again

Because of that, she could call herself a writer and an author without lying.  I don’t know whether or not she thinks of herself that way.

Book Promotions

This means that Lisa Bevere is dealing with book promotion, just like all the other authors.  Like all the other authors, she has a unique way of doing it, but despite the uniqueness, a great deal goes on that is just like all the other book marketing that really works.

Factoids

There is a lot of public speaking involved during which she is the one doing the talking.

There is a significant amount of travel involved with the position.

There was a lot of money poured into the speaking, traveling and other marketing, but that means that all that money now also needs to be brought back in just to break even on the books.  Because she does a lot of preaching, it is theoretically possible that she has saved massive amounts of money on publicity by being allowed to promote her books right along with a series of public speaking engagements (preaching for God in her case) that may be supported financially by the churches who would have had her come and speak had she not written the book….but if they did not let her mention the book, the value of those efforts as book promotion would plummet, but not be totally destroyed.  I do not know if it is that, or if the publishing company just fronted the money for the promotions.

Desires

Like all the other writers, I desire certain kinds of support and outcomes.  The kind of publishing company and publishing contract is tied up in professional desires; aspirations as desires.

Recently, right here online, I have discovered another slew of fellow-authors who are also, often, dealing with trying to promote their work, my work, your work despite smaller budgets and publishing contracts that aren’t “the dream book contract”.

The reality of every profession is more complicated than it seems on the surface and from the outside.  Writing and publishing abide by that same principle.

Writer, Reader, check it out:

I invite you to check out works listing with links to buy .

Unlike many authors, the main editor of both my novels and the little nonfiction philosophy booklet was actually me too.   My works are not all the same genre.  They were not all put out by the same publishing company.

None of them had more than $50,000 put in up front by a publishing company and none of the publishers provided me with any marketing budget whatsoever.

There are other authors around.  You know how it is: in a bookstore, library or online writers group it starts to seem like everyone writes books.  The other day I was reminded by another woman, that not everyone does.

Most of the readers don’t also write books, but some do or will someday.

Writer’s Life

Anyone have anything to say?

The fact is that the written word is still using the language.

Writers are:

  1. Just people who have the gift of gab and the time or the patience to do it in writing.
  2.  People who tend to have something to say.  In some cases these are just egocentric people who love attention.  Other times, these are insightful thinkers who have great input.
  3.  Lonely people who want to talk to someone.
  4.  Happy people who prefer to hang out alone more than very extroverted, social people but not nearly as much as most hermits.

Images,

but not in pictures….Novelists: male: Dr. Watson, the narrator and character of the Sherlock Holmes stories.  Neil Gaiman.  Novelists female:  the lady from the TV show ‘Murder she wrote’ and JK Rowling.

Journalists: Walter Kronkite and Barbara Walters.  Next generations: Diane Sawyer and John Stewart.  These are very well dressed, fast-talkers able to do rapid research and behind the scenes are adept at accepting criticism and making editorial changes, on a daily basis, at the office.

Still, we also have the image of the war-correspondent: some nutter who went overseas and dangerous to get 5 minutes on TV.  Some of us still recall that 10 years ago or so, a freelance journalist broke into the mainstream with some of his work over in Iraq and ended up getting offered a “real job at NBC”.   That’s a clue as to how tough it is for freelancers and how many rightly assume that freelancers are people hoping to get a steady job as staff writers.

Freelancers

People doing it for love.  People desperately trying to break into the field.  Hobbyists, who just want to write for fun now and then and are happy to get the occasional ‘prize money’ of being paid for a published item.

Millenials and younger

Women and college students, trying their hand to earn a few bucks doing something cool that can be done while kids are playing around in the house.

These are sometimes poor people who have been trying to earn a living writing for varying amounts of time.  They may be depressed, or drunkards, or totally fascinating people.

YA and Children’s

Either people with decent day jobs or ‘miracle mom’ types who are able to earn a steady living from sales of their books.

People who seem to have won the ‘incredibly successful book lottery’.  When asked, the swear they are overwhelmed and thrilled at the success of their book.  They are now swimming in more money than they know what to do with.  Often it is something like a fuzzy caterpillar book, or a dragon illustrated by previously unknown illustrator and everyone with children the right age for it are reading it and everyone just loves the book.

Staff Writers

People earning a living.  Often the younger ones are financially poor but still have hope.  The older ones are sometimes still poor but many are lower middle class and have a weird vibe because if asked they just have a day job and would never write for anyone who wouldn’t pay them.  These blend in seamlessly with other workers during lunch breaks in big cities when people are out of the office and bustling about.
